2nd UITP India Seminar on IT Solutions for Public Transport: Event Recap

I had the privilege of attending and speaking at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) India’s seminar in Bengaluru, India on 6 and 7 March. The theme was IT Solutions for Public Transport. If you were not able to attend this event, here’s a quick recap of the great speeches and thought leadership pieces that we heard there.

It’s time to invest in technology

The consistent message from speakers throughout the seminar was that it’s time for India’s public transport sector to invest in IT. The engagement of technology is no longer a nice-to-have for the Indian public transport market, but a prerequisite to evolve, provide better services for their customers and improve utilisation of operator assets.

Many prominent public transport figures were highlighting that India is now at a precipice: they’ve come as far as they can with manual processes; public transport operators need to make an investment in technology to get better outcomes and increase efficiency.

There were some fantastic speeches by transport companies at the forefront of innovation such as Bridj and Uber, pressing home that change is happening all around. Transport today is all about addressing the needs of the commuter, and the data you collect can be used to provide a much-needed service to the customer.

Dominant themes
  • Too much data, not enough intelligence – A lot of data is being collected and collated through the movement towards digitisation of information captured. However, no real intelligence is coming from all this data. This is a shame because data collection through technology and analysis can provide good answers for public transport operators. (Click here to read our eBook on how you can turn your data into business insights for decision-making.)
  • Evidence, not instinct – There was a clear call for the industry to move towards evidence-based decision-making and efficiency through the use of data analysis. We need to stop doing things for no reason other than “this is how we’ve always done it”. While instinct and intuition can be invaluable, it’s still vital to know the facts and figures of your operations to back up your decisions.
I also took this opportunity to present Trapeze’s new solution for business intelligence and perform a live demo at this seminar. This tool makes it possible for bus operators to analyse their business data quickly and flexibly – learn more about it here.
  • Leveraging IT for efficiency – Besides increasing your capacity for data-gathering, implementing IT solutions is guaranteed to improve your operational efficiency by consolidating, automating or eliminating manual tasks. Tushar Kshirsagar, Head of IT for our client Prasanna Purple Mobility Solutions, spoke about their recent implementation of the Trapeze ERP and Planning solutions and the benefits they have experienced. Key takeaways

Key takeaways from UITP India, 2017 ERP

As an active member of the Australian bus industry where the use of technology in operations, planning and management has been pervasive for decades, I regard this as an exciting time for Indian public transport operators.

They are starting from a clean slate with so much technology available to them. As long as they have a clear vision on where they want to be in the future, it is likely that there is an IT solution already in the market to help them get there. Nothing is impossible.

For example, we provide industry-focussed solutions built for specifically for bus operations. From a planning and scheduling tool to a day-of-operations system that covers everything from when a driver walks into a depot until he leaves at the end of the day, Trapeze has solutions specifically designed to address the issues and problems that operators face.
