Trapeze Group ANZ has been selected by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to deliver the Bus Solution package of the Opal Next Generation (ONG) program. When fully implemented, ONG is set to transform the way passengers plan, pay, and source journey information on the NSW Opal-enabled bus network.
Trapeze Group was chosen to provide a comprehensive Intelligent Transport System (ITS) for approximately 5,000 buses across the Greater Sydney region. The technology strengthens TfNSW’s operational visibility and control, supports reliable day of operations decision‑making, and ensures continuity of data across the system.
The platform delivered by Trapeze will be fully integrated into the state’s wider transport environment by supporting an enhanced passenger experience, shared data, and more coordinated operations. The technology is set to improve the accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of information provided to passengers, including through more accurate real-time service updates, while also empowering Sydney’s bus drivers.
Passengers can look forward to basing their travel plans on reliable information at every stage of their journey. This includes more accurate arrival predictions on passenger information displays at stops and stations, clearer updates on the move, and accessible on-board announcements that support everyone using the network.
Trapeze has more than 50 years’ experience delivering ITS solutions around the world, including in Singapore, Ireland, Riyadh, and Melbourne. Sydney is set to become the latest major transport network delivered by Trapeze, leveraging its sister company ebblo’s flagship Horizon ITS solution. Trapeze and ebblo are both part of Modaxo, the global collective of software companies focused exclusively on people movement.
Sanket Nayak, Managing Director of Trapeze Group ANZ, said the program reflects a strong alignment between TfNSW’s long term objectives and Trapeze’s global experience delivering public transport technology at scale.
“Transport for NSW has set a bold and progressive vision for the future of bus operations in Sydney. I am honoured that Trapeze has been selected to deliver this critical component of the Opal Next Generation program,” he said.
“Our focus now is to implement a robust platform that gives TfNSW the tools, insights, and control needed to manage one of the world’s premiere bus networks. We look forward to working closely together to ensure the system delivers outstanding performance, resilience, and operational capability.”
David Eason, Head of ITS at Trapeze Group ANZ, said that Trapeze has a strong track record of delivering ITS technology for the world’s most high-profile networks.
“Passengers across Greater Sydney deserve a predictable, reliable, and easy to use bus network that connects communities. At Trapeze we’re thrilled to help deliver this through the Opal Next Generation program,” he said.
“By strengthening real time tracking and providing rich data to TfNSW, Trapeze can help create connected journeys and more dependable services day to day. This is an exciting step forward, and we’re proud to work with TfNSW to bring meaningful, lasting improvements to the way passengers experience bus travel across Sydney.”
